      Thanks for the question!

The short answer is that I am very short sighted, and without my glasses I will bump into things. They also make me look smart! I also am too scared to try contact lenses because I don’t like the thought of poking myself in the eye.

As to the science behind why I need glasses, in short sighted people like me, the eye is slightly the wrong shape. They are slightly too long from back to front.

Usually, the lens in your eye focuses light onto an area in the back of the eye (called the retina). This allows you to see a clear image. In my eyes, my lenses focus light slightly in front of my retinas so I get a blurry image. The lenses in my glasses adjust the focus of the light so that the lenses in my eyes can focus light properly on the retina so I can see.

I’ve worn glasses for as long as I can remember, I’m short sighted which means objects that are far away are blurry if I don’t wear my glasses. My eyesight actual improved every year until I was 21 as the lens in my eye adapted but now its started getting worse again

As I’ve worn them all my life I don’t quite recognise myself without them on so I think I’ll always keep getting glasses.
